On Sunday, January 18, members of Saint Brendan Eastern Orthodox Church in Bullhead City, led by priest Father Joseph MacPherson, engaged in our annual tradition of blessing the Colorado River as part of our celebration of Theophany, also known as Epiphany. Theophany is an ancient Christian holiday that is celebrated shortly after Christmas. It commemorates both the baptism of Jesus Christ by John the Baptist, which marked the start of Jesus’ public ministry, and the first public pronouncement of the Trinity. In the Orthodox tradition Jesus is understood to have blessed the waters of the river in which he was baptized, and for that reason Orthodox Christians around the world take this opportunity to bless local bodies of water.
